The World’s Fair Centennial International Exhibition (1876) in Philadelphia inspired the quest for ‘olden tyme’ plants and poetry, magically created at Appledore by Celia Thaxter and painted by Childe Hassam.

In 1893 Chicago hosted the World’s Columbian Exposition which featured murals Primitive Woman by Mary Fairchild MacMonnies facing Modern Woman by Mary Cassatt.

Three generations of American artists including Frederick Frieseke tired of narrow artistic traditions at home. They sought the greater freedom of France and the comforts of the Hotel Baudy in Giverny. This lectures looks at Impressions of sunshine in gardens on both sides of the Atlantic through painters, plants and personalities.

Caroline has lectured in the all around the world.

She’s a Cambridge University tutor and course director and she lectures for the Royal Horticultural Society, museums and many organisations worldwide.

She’s the author of 12 books on gardens and in 2017 was awarded the Herb Society of America ‘Elizabeth Crisp Rea Award’.
